Mom was everybody's Mom, everybody's sweetheart, and everybody's friend. A sweet, dignified, and kind lady, she never met anyone who didn't become a friend for life. A real beauty with high cheek bones due to some Native American ancestry, she had a few more wrinkles when she smiled. Those wrinkles had been earned and only enhanced the appearance of the lovely woman she still was. In her lifetime she had loved and lost a husband. And she raised three fine boys largely by her own means. Now her sons had moved on exploring their own lives. Although Betty was careful not to spoil her sons, she did not ascribe to that particular belief when it came to animals, neighbors, and those in need. In describing Betty, it is impossible not to include her sidekick and constant companion. Pal was just that. Mom's pal, confidant and protector. A larger than large German Shepherd, Pal ruled. As the brothers' Mom, Betty was the Ying of Sarge's Yang. Sarge's fatherly influence of duty and loyalty to family, friends and country - along with a healthy dose of work ethic - was key in forming the values of the boys as they grew up. Sarge's motto, "Capite Omnia Praeter Ipsum Labrum" was literally tattooed on each of the brothers' upper left arm. In Latin, it loosely means, "Take everything but their lip" - sort of a "Go for the gusto and don't give me any crap" philosophy of life. Mom, on the other hand, was the family's guide in matters of the heart, the one who made sure all the men in her family went to church regularly, and was the moral compass by which the three boys have steered their way through some stormy seas of life. It should come as no surprise that Rico, Willy and Dave were as familiar with every issue of the Sgt. Rock comic book series as they were the scriptures of the Good Book.
